Nassau Veterinary Hospital is now changing our feline vaccination protocol. Due to the latest scientific information, concerning reactions, and overwhelming evidence that annual vaccination for feline distemper, upper respiratory syndrome and feline leukemia is unnecessary, we will be altering our vaccine schedule.
We are now recommending that our feline patients be vaccinated every other year for their upper respiratory and distemper series, as well as feline leukemia. We will still require rabies annually until further notice. We have concerns that over-vaccinating our feline patients may be contributing to kidney disease as well as some other immune system problems.
We also have growing concern about feline heartworm disease. This is a disease that is spread by mosquitoes, and is deadly to our feline patients. Indoor cats are at just as much risk as kitties who venture outside. Where there is a safe and effective treatment for heartworms in dogs, this diagnosis in our cat patients can be a death sentence. There is no cure for this in cats, and even with symptomatic treatment, most cats will die from this blood parasite infection.
Consequently, we are now strongly recommending feline heartworm testing and prevention. Prevention can be given to your feline pet in one of two ways:
1. You can give a feline “Heartworm Pill” made by Heartguard….this is given once monthly.
2. You can put your kitty on “Revolution”, which is similar to our currently recommended flea products (ie; Advantage, Frontline). This form of heartworm protection for your cat is a small vial of liquid that you put on the skin between your cat's head and shoulders in several places once monthly. This medication also has some efficacy against ear mites, fleas, and ticks.
Please be assured that we at Nassau Veterinary Hospital strive to keep up with the latest medical news so that we may take the best care of your pet. We only have the best interest of your pet at heart.

On July 4th, the staff of Nassau Veterinary Hospital gathered at a friend and clients house to celebrate our great country's birthday. We had lots of laughs, some hamburgers and of course included several of our dogs in the festivities. Happy Birthday USA!!!!!!

On July 31st, a very, very, special person got a chance to celebrate her 21st birthday. Kristi Henderson, head technician at Nassau Veterinary Hospital, who has been a loyal employee for 7 years, turned 21 on June 11th. We rewarded her dedication by renting a stretch limo and traveling to Jacksonville to her favorite Mexican restaurant. We then continued on to a place called “Harmonious Monks”, where audience participation is the theme. Needless to say, Kristi did a lot of participating!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY KRISTI!!!!!!!
